Meet Agent Lorraine Broughton. Considered the crown jewel of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service, Agent Broughton is a force to be reckoned with – a near pitch-perfect mix of brains and brawn that will soon be dispatched to Berlin in 1989, just prior to the historic moment when the Berlin Wall was torn asunder.
When casting the net in search of his leading lady for Atomic Blonde – previously titled The Coldest City – choreographer-turned-director David Leitch (John Wick) had only one actress in mind: Charlize Theron. Two years on from the moment when the Oscar-winner stole headlines left, right, and center in Mad Max: Fury Road, the actress is ready to trade Furiosa for femme fatale, as her feisty, unforgiving Lorraine Broughton works to locate a top-secret dossier during one of the most politically volatile periods in Germany’s history. James McAvoy also stars as a fellow spy, and can be seen rocking a fur coat via the gallery below, per EW.
Theron, who is also attached to produce after optioning the rights to Antony Johnston and Sam Hart’s graphic novel, was a natural fit for the role, according to Leitch, who revealed to EW that “it’s refreshing to find an actor who can do these long, long takes, memorize the choreography, maintain the character, and deliver a performance. She’s extraordinary.”
Also starring John Goodman, Toby Jones, McAvoy, The Mummy‘s Sofia Boutella and Eddie Marsan, Atomic Blonde follows “a top-level spy for MI6, who is dispatched to Berlin to take down a ruthless espionage ring that has just killed an undercover agent for reasons unknown.”
Following a world premiere at this weekend’s SXSW 2017 in Austin, Texas, Atomic Blonde is expected to pummel its way into theaters on July 28th.
