Kurt Russell may be the physical manifestation of Ego, the Living Planet in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but as writer-director James Gunn explained to Complex just recently, the character’s ancient abilities know no bounds.
First spotted by Screen Rant, Complex hosted the interview with Gunn in anticipation of The Belko Experiment, the nail-biting office thriller he co-wrote with director Greg McLean. It opens tomorrow, March 17th, via select theaters (our review), but it didn’t take long before the conversation veered toward Marvel’s galactic motley crew. Without straying too far into spoiler territory – remember, knowing the identity of Papa Quill seemingly won’t spoil your enjoyment of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – James Gunn teased the ways in which Ego is able to manifest himself in a variety of different ways. Does that mean Russell’s all-powerful deity will change in appearance as the sequel unfolds? It certainly seems so.
Here’s what Gunn had to share:
Ego is a living planet who is able to manifest himself in different ways he’s been alone for millions of years and he’s learned how to control the molecules around him in such a way as to create avatars of themselves, such as Kurt Russell. I think Ego was a very lonely character out there by himself and went off in search of love and perhaps found it in Quill’s mother.
On May 5th, Marvel’s ragtag crew of heroes will join forces once again for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It won’t be the final adventure for Star-Lord and Co. either, according to writer-director James Gunn, who conceded that while a third installment is inevitable, it remains to be seen whether he’ll return to direct.
