Just as one supernatural war thriller begins to take strides toward production – yesterday brought news that Overlord, Paramount and Bad Robot’s WWII pic, had added Wyatt Russell and Fences breakout Jovan Adepo – Deadline is reporting that Luke Cage star Theo Rossi has climbed aboard Ghosts of War.

There, he’ll join Brenton Thwaites (Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) and Skylar Astin as Kirk, a “God-fearing solider who has no problem killing Nazis but faces inexplicable paranormal events that make him tweaked and unhinged.” Those inexplicable paranormal events are the supernatural fuel driving Eric Bress’ (The Butterfly Effect) wartime thriller. Directing from his own screenplay, it’s understood the Ghosts of War will be summoned before the cameras before the year’s end, so expect one or two additional casting announcements to be made between now and then.

As for the film’s official logline, Deadline reveals that Ghosts of War largely centers on “five battle-hardened American soldiers assigned to hold a French chateau near the end of World War II. Formerly occupied by the Nazi high command, this respite quickly descends into madness when they encounter a supernatural enemy far more terrifying than anything seen on the battlefield.”

Exactly who or what that supernatural enemy turns out to be is anyone’s guess, though it seems safe to assume that its arrival will drastically shake up the film’s plot. Following a memorable stint on Marvel’s Luke Cage – he played the ice-cool Shades – Rossi has also lined up long-delayed drama Lowriders, which is expected to cruise into theaters on May 12th. There’s also chatter of Luke Cage season 2, but Marvel and Netflix will soon have their hands full with The Defenders, so don’t expect the Mike Colter-led solo series to return anytime soon.

Stay tuned for more on Ghosts of War as the project inches closer to active development.
