Doctor Strange Ends Its Box Office Run As Another Massive Success For Marvel Studios

Doctor Strange was in North American theatres for a total of nineteen weeks, and it’s now being reported that the Marvel Studios release has ended that run with an impressive haul of $232 million. That’s a solid number and one which guarantees that the Phase 3 film will receive a sequel in the very near future.

Throw in an additional $444 million from overseas and Doctor Strange now has a worldwide total of $677 million. Considering the fact that it was slapped with a $165 million production budget, and Disney and Marvel have made an awful lot of money here. By all accounts, the Sorcerer Supreme’s debut was a massive success for them.

Domestically, Doctor Strange is the ninth biggest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie of all-time, sitting between Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Thor: The Dark World. Worldwide, it’s in seventh place between those same two releases. So, while the Scott Derrickson-directed film isn’t quite the success story Guardians of the Galaxy was, no one can deny that it was a winner at the box office, especially as it starred a character known only to fans of the comic books before the marketing for the movie began.

You’ll also be pleased to know that Doctor Strange was the thirteenth biggest release of 2016, finishing just slightly behind Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Pretty good company, eh? Throw in the money it’s made from DVD and Blu-ray sales and it wouldn’t be too surprising if the sequel’s made official at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Fingers crossed.
