With each year that passes, Netflix’s digital library of content grows and evolves, either by acquiring international rights to marquee projects in the vein of Death Note or, in the vein of Sandy Wexler, striking up a multi-picture deal with a known star – Adam Sandler, in this instance – to foster a string of movies in-house.
The end result is a steady and remarkably diverse stream of content for Netflix subscribers, and Deadline brings word today of another project that has been added to the collection: Apostle. Pitched as a period revenge thriller, the kidnapping drama is coming by way of Gareth Evans, the Welsh filmmaker best known for crafting two action masterclasses in The Raid and its sequel, Berandal.
With Apostle, Evans plans to wind down the scope to focus on Dan Stevens’ lone protagonist, who ventures forth onto a mysterious island in search of his missing sister. What he finds instead is a dangerous religious cult, and Deadline’s report also confirms some additional cast members who may or may not be inducted into said cult. They include Michael Sheen, Bill Millner, Kristine Froseth and Lucy Boynton, who is one of the many stars to have booked their place for Fox’s Murder on the Orient Express remake.
No further details were given on how those new arrivals factor into the story, but we know that Stevens’ journey will be a harrowing one, after it “soon becomes clear that the cult will regret the day it baited this man, who digs deeper and deeper into the secrets and lies upon which the commune is built.” Will Gareth Evans’ signature fight choreography seep into Apostle? Time will tell – soon, in fact, as production kicks off next month.
