Much digital ink has been spilled over the transition between Christian Bale and Ben Affleck, after the latter picked up the mantle as the Caped Crusader in time for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. And though there have been mooted reports that the latter wants out of the spandex altogether, there’s another changing of the guard to be found in Justice League, and it involves a certain Commissioner Gordon.

Once played by Gary Oldman across Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, by the time Justice League rolls around, it’ll be J.K. Simmons that steps into the boots of Gotham’s iconic law enforcer, and the latter has the full support of the former. ComicBook.com caught up with Oldman at CinemaCon, where the esteemed Brit was in town to promote his upcoming role in Churchill. On the topic of Justice League, Oldman told the outlet that he has no doubt that J.K. Simmons will make a cracking Commissioner Gordon, and is intrigued to see how Zack Snyder handles the character in this new era of DC movies.

“J.K Simmons doesn’t need any advice from me. He’s a wonderful actor. I’m intrigued to see what he does with it. I’m looking forward to it. Gordon was very good to me so I wish him a lot of luck. I’m excited for him.”

For comic book fans, J.K. Simmons will always be remembered for his performance as J. Jonah Jameson, but after making the switch from Marvel to DC, we’re excited to see how the Oscar-winner flourishes in the DC Extended Universe. He’s one of a number of supporting players set to appear in Justice League, considering that Snyder’s ensemble movie also makes room for Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe and Bill Crudup.

Justice League makes a beeline for theaters on November 17th. Elsewhere in the DCEU, Wonder Woman is on course to release on June 2nd.
