Sonequa Martin-Green Says Star Trek: Discovery Is A “Bigger, Rawer” Take On The Series; Andrew Lincoln Lobbying For Walking Dead Reunion

Following up on yesterday's grand reveal, Sonequa Martin-Green has teased the ways in which Star Trek: Discovery is "bigger [and] rawer" than its peers.

If CBS was holding fire on announcing the true identity of Sonequa Martin-Green’s character in Star Trek: Discovery – turns out Lieutenant Commander Rainsford was merely a codename used during pre-production – then the show-stopping season 7 finale of The Walking Dead was the last domino to fall.

Fast forward to now and we know Martin-Green’s character to be First Officer Michael Burnham, lead protagonist of Discovery and the Number One to Jason Isaacs’ Captain Lorca. Little is currently known about CBS’ release plans for Star Trek: Discovery at the time of writing, but now that the network has lifted the lid on her character, SMG has offered up new details on the upcoming small screen revival, and why she considers it to be “bigger, rawer and grittier” than those Star Trek series that came before.

Per TVLine:

This iteration of Star Trek is going to have a different take than the others in the Star Trek canon. It’s going to be bigger, rawer and grittier… and the story’s going to build on itself. It’s going to be a tremendous journey. Since Star Trek has always been through the eyes of the captain, to be coming from [his second-in-command’s] mindset is going to be refreshing and challenging in ways that are very thrilling.

Lining up alongside the likes of Doug Jones (Crimson Peak), Michelle Yeoh, Chris Obi, Shazad Latif and The Office star Rainn Wilson, Sonequa Martin-Green is undoubtedly an exciting addition to the casting roster, but if Andrew Lincoln has his way, there could well be a Walking Dead reunion on the cards.

Variety caught up with the British actor in the fallout of TWD‘s season 7 finale, where Lincoln showered praised on his former co-star.

She’s an incredible personality with incredible grace and strength and tenacity. She’s a very impressive woman. She will be leading that starship with the same class and fortitude. That is going to be one happy spaceship. I’d love to beam myself up at some point in some kind of Greg Nicotero special effects makeup.

Still no word on when Star Trek: Discovery will grace CBS All Access – the network’s sci-fi reboot was initially designed to launch the online service back in January – but we’ll keep you posted as more information comes to light.
