Mark Hamill Teases Possible Turn To The Dark Side For Luke In The Last Jedi

At long last, Disney and Lucasfilm have pulled the lid back on Star Wars: The Last Jedi, delivering the film's first teaser trailer this weekend at Celebration Orlando. While it was light on plot details, as expected, there was one particular moment that's got everyone talking. It comes right at the end of the preview, when Luke utters the line, "It's time for the Jedi to end." Cue fans around the world losing their collective minds.

At long last, Disney and Lucasfilm have pulled the lid back on Star Wars: The Last Jedi, delivering the film’s first teaser trailer this weekend at Celebration Orlando. Now, before we start speculating too much, this could just mean that he feels the Jedi’s days are numbered, so it’s sadly now their time. However, what’s more probable is that what Luke’s saying here is that the Jedi should end. After all, it’d make sense give what happened to his father and the tragic turn of his nephew, Ben. But could this line also indicate that our beloved hero is about to take a turn to the dark side?

Speaking to ABC News, Mark Hamill commented on the moment that’s got everyone going nuts, saying that, “It was as shocking to me to read what Rian [Johnson] had written as I’m sure it will be for the audience.” When asked if it means Luke’s headed down a darker path, he replied with, “It’s possible, anything’s possible.” And seeing as the character’s always had tendencies towards the more sinister side of the Force throughout the original trilogy, we’d have to agree with the actor.

Perhaps his arc in Star Wars: The Last Jedi will see his belief in the light reinvigorated though by mentoring Rey? Just in time for him to die and become one with the Force? That’s another popular theory doing the rounds, and one that sounds plausible, but at this point, it’s hard to say which way things will go for Luke.

Either way, we already know that the character is extremely important to the upcoming film and after not getting to mutter so much as a single line in The Force Awakens, it’ll be nice to see him having more of a presence in Rian Johnson’s sequel – no matter which way his arc plays out.
