Brie Larson Was Initially Wary Of Headlining Captain Marvel As Kevin Feige Teases “Firepower, Guts And A Great Story”

As part of her Vanity Fair cover shoot, Brie Larson revealed to the outlet that she was initially wary of signing on to play Captain Marvel.

Brie Larson is attached to the title role, the origin story is in place, and Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have signed on to direct – all that’s left now is for Captain Marvel to begin filming in the early stages of 2018.

It’s taken an awful long time – too long, perhaps – but Marvel is finally ready to unleash its first standalone superhero movie headed up by a woman. And they’ve arguably selected the perfect actress for the gig. Brie Larson broke on to Hollywood’s scene with a fierce, yet beautifully vulnerable performance in Lenny Abrahamson’s Room – a performance that bagged Larson the Academy Award in 2016, among many other prestigious accolades – and the actress has since gained a foothold in the realm of high-profile actioners thanks to Kong: Skull Island and, to a lesser degree, Ben Wheatley’s old-school Free Fire.

But as Brie Larson reveals to Vanity Fair (via CBM), it turns out she was initially wary of signing on to play one Carol Danvers, and spent “a really long time” mulling things over before agreeing to headline 2019’s Captain Marvel solo pic.

It took me a really long time. I had to sit with myself, think about my life and what I want out of it. Ultimately, I couldn’t deny the fact that this movie is everything I care about, everything that’s progressive and important and meaningful, and a symbol I wished I would’ve had growing up. I really, really feel like it’s worth it if it can bring understanding and confidence to young women—I’ll do it.

One Marvel producer that has full confidence in Brie Larson is Kevin Feige, who highlighted the actress’ dynamism while chatting to Vanity Fair, before teasing the “great story” that awaits in 2019.

Captain Marvel has powers that far surpass many of her heroic counterparts, and in order to bring this superhero to life and make her relatable and disarming we needed an actress with both range and humanity. So, like the best of our leading characters who have brought the Marvel Universe to life, Brie possesses the depth and energy that can fuse firepower, guts, and a great story.

Captain Marvel graces theaters on March 8th, 2019. There’s a good chance we’ll see Brie Larson take flight as Carol Danvers shortly before, too – not unlike Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther made his debut via Civil War – what with rumors claiming the Oscar-winner will crop up in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War.
