Rogue One Finishes Theatrical Run Well In Excess Of $1 Billion

Box Office Mojo reports that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story finished its theatrical run with a worldwide total of $1.056 billion.

Almost five months on from the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Box Office Mojo reports that the Gareth Edwards-directed spinoff finished its theatrical run with a grand total of $1.056 billion – not bad for a dogged Star Wars pic that was initially written off as a creative risk during the throes of production.

First spotted by ComicBook, the actual breakdown of Rogue One‘s global cume makes for some interesting reading, too, given how Disney’s anthology film collected more than 50 percent of its total on home turf – $532 million, for those keeping track – with overseas markets accounting for exactly 49.6 percent ($523 million). If anything, it’s a pointed reminder of the franchise’s unwavering popularity across North America – there are those who consider Star Wars to be more akin to a religion than a line of movies, after all – and it’s fitting that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story capped off its theatrical run on May 4th. The Force is indeed strong in Gareth Edwards’ star-studded offshoot.

For Disney, a worldwide haul of $1.056 billion ensures the company’s line of Star Wars anthology movies gets off on the right foot. Granted, it’s a far cry from the eye-watering $2.06 billion of The Force Awakens, but it’s worth keeping in mind that the Mouse House never expected Gareth Edwards’ standalone pic to hit the dizzying heights of Episode VII. Next to tumble off the production line is The Last Jedi in December, before Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s in-development Han Solo origin story launches in May 2018. Rogue One has no doubt set the bar fairly high when it comes to box office figures, but if there’s one thing we know, it’s that Solo doesn’t like to hear the odds when they’re not stacked in his favor.

First released in December of 2016, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is now available to pick up via DVD and Blu-ray. Not only that, but John Knoll, VFX specialist and one of the key architects who helped in the development of Rogue One, is seemingly kicking around an idea for another Star Wars spinoff, too. Hopefully we’ll hear more on that in the not too distant future.
