For nigh on two decades, Hugh Jackman portrayed Wolverine with a real sense of gusto – so much so, in fact, that many consider the two to be inseparable.
If and when 20th Century Fox choose to recast the volatile mutant – word is that the studio is in no rush to replace Jackman…for now – it’ll naturally take some time before X-Men fans warm to the new and likely younger Wolverine. It is, after all, the end of an era, and with Logan now expected to claw its way onto Blu-ray and DVD today, May 23rd, Collider caught up with Hugh Jackman to reflect on 17 years and nine films of mutant history.
In fact, it’s the same interview in which the Aussie actor posted details regarding the film’s scrapped Sabretooth cameo – turns out Liev Schreiber’s Victor Creed isn’t the only X-Men character to be cut out of Logan altogether – and when Collider pressed for more information relating to Wolverine’s iconic blue-and-yellow suit, Hugh Jackman conceded that he’d been campaigning for the costume for quite some time. But in the end, and after James Mangold envisioned Wolverine’s swan song to be a brooding, Western-esque road movie, Jackman admits that Wolvie’s famous suit simply doesn’t belong in the bleak world that the director and Co. created.
There were a couple of things I couldn’t work out how to do. Fans always say, ‘When are we gonna see you in the blue and yellow spandex? We’ve gotta see that shot!’ We tried a little bit in The Wolverine, it didn’t happen—on that plane at the end he opens up a box and there’s the suit, I think that ended up getting cut. So the suit was one thing but we just couldn’t work out how to do it, so if anyone can work that out you go for it. The other idea that I always loved was the idea in the comics that every year on Logan’s birthday, his brother comes and beats the crap out of him. I just thought that was such a cool very fun idea and very in keeping to those characters. His birthday present was just a beating and that’s the only time he sees him (laughs). I kept saying, ‘Jim can we put that in?’ and he goes ‘Eh this is not that movie.’ But anyway.
