What made the original Guardians of the Galaxy so unique when it arrived in 2014 was that it was the first MCU film to fully embrace the cosmic side of the Marvel universe (after the Thor movies had introduced the concept). Out of the core five team members of the titular squad, only Peter Quill AKA Star-Lord was a human being.
In the next few years, however, we’ll likely see a lot more alien species in Avengers: Infinity War, Thor: Ragnarok and possibly Captain Marvel. Given that, it might be best if Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 shuffles things up and adds in some more human characters, right?
At least, that’s what director James Gunn’s hinted at in his latest Q&A on his official Facebook page. Gunn was asked by a fan whether his previous comments about the importance of Quill being the only Earthling in the team’s line-up would hold over into the third movie, and he responded with the reveal that “human characters are no longer out of consideration.”
Obviously, this is far from confirmation that Vol. 3 will definitely include Earth-based characters, but it proves that Gunn is at least contemplating the option. Fans will be excited by this news in any case, as there are many beloved human characters that are connected with the Guardians of the Galaxy in the comics that are due for a spot in the movies. Most notably, you have Richard Rider’s version of Nova. The Nova Corps were previously introduced in the first film, of course, so the set-up for the character is already there.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is currently in theatres now and doing big business as usual for Marvel Studios. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, meanwhile, will serve as the finale for this version of the team and is expected to arrive in 2020.
