Ever the one to uphold an open dialogue with the Star Wars community via Twitter, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has addressed concerns that his forthcoming sci-fi sequel will repeat what has come before.
Citing those complaints levelled at The Force Awakens – many still begrudge J.J. Abrams’ franchise revival for paying homage (to the point that Disney’s 2015 blockbuster was derivative, perhaps?) to A New Hope – one Twitter user reached out to Johnson to ask straight up whether Star Wars: The Last Jedi will manage to side-step those same pitfalls. And though he’s unable to provide a detailed answer, lest he stray too far into spoiler territory, the Looper filmmaker offered up a refreshingly frank response.
In short: Johnson tackled those concerns head on, reminding “Concerned Fan 10” that he’s dedicated the past three years of his life to creating Star Wars: The Last Jedi to the best of his ability. And though Disney’s 2017 tentpole is still simmering in post-production at the time of writing, it’s fair to say that Rian Johnson is overseeing what is arguably one of the year’s most-anticipated movies.

On December 15th, Disney and Lucasfilm will usher in the next chapter in the Skywalker saga. Beyond Star Wars: The Last Jedi, we also have Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Han Solo anthology film to consider, not to mention Episode IX. Jurassic World helmer Colin Trevorrow is behind the lens for the latter, which has already planted the flag on a May 2019 release date.
