In the space of four short years, Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and David Ayer’s all-star Suicide Squad launched to varying degrees of success, but it’s fair to say that none of them managed to jump-start the DC Extended Universe as Warner Bros. intended.
From convoluted plots to nonsensical villains, the DCEU has struggled to resonate with the moviegoing masses, and one need only look at the critical reviews for each of those three blockbuster tentpoles for evidence of that. Warner’s shared universe needed a hero, then – a true hero, one able to inject a sense of personality into a compelling, progressive origin story for our times. Enter Wonder Woman.
Though it is not without faults of its own, the Patty Jenkins-directed actioner has hit the ground running following its theatrical release late last week, and already, Wonder Woman is well on its way to an impressive campaign at the international box office. Financial talk aside, the film’s success also heralds a defining turning point for the DCEU in general, and there’s now a real sense that Warner’s superhero franchise is beginning to coalesce – and not a moment too soon.
Further afield, we have the likes of Batgirl, Nightwing, and Gotham City Sirens cramming up the pipeline, not to mention those films a little closer to home like Aquaman and Justice League.
