Remember when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 posted a suitably stellar score coming out of Marvel’s internal tests? Turns out the second of Marvel’s 2017 trifecta, Spider-Man: Homecoming, is also attracting nothing but praise from early screenings.
At least, that’s according to Robert Downey Jr., who solicited a series of questions from rabid fans through a recent live stream (via ComicBook.com). When pressed about the palpable buzz swirling around Jon Watts’ imminent reboot, the MCU stalwart claimed that Homecoming is “getting a 10/10” from those viewers fortunate enough to catch an early screening.
That being said, it seems as though Robert Downey Jr. is yet to actually see the film himself. While appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! alongside Tom Holland for a special Marvel-themed preview – the double act talked Spider-Man: Homecoming along with their eventual reunion in next year’s Avengers: Infinity War – Downey Jr. conceded that he is yet to see Homecoming in full. Holland, on the other hand, has already viewed a rough cut of Marvel’s upcoming blockbuster.
“I saw it about a month ago. You know when you revise for an exam and you feel like you crushed it, but the longer you wait for the results, the more you think you ruined it? So walking into the screening, I was like, ‘This is gonna be awful, I’m gonna hate it,’ and leaving I was over the moon. I loved it.”
Building on their crackerjack chemistry from Civil War, Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr. are expected to share a handful of scenes in Homecoming, when the latter will adopt the ‘cool uncle’ mantle. He’s not the only Avenger to lend Spidey a helping hand, either, after it was revealed that the God of Thunder himself Chris Hemsworth helped bring Holland to Marvel’s attention, before his In The Heart of the Sea co-star eventually landed the gig.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is, at the time of writing, exactly one month away from its theatrical release. July 7th is the date for your diaries, folks, and for all intents and purposes, the studio seems to be staring down the face of yet another box office hit. Whether Homecoming will resonant with the Marvel faithful, though, is another question entirely.
