Supergirl Exec Confirms Lena Luthor Doesn’t Know Kara’s Secret Identity

The CW's Arrowverse shows have often played fast and loose with the classic trope of the superhero hiding their nighttime activities from their friends and family. For instance, The Flash currently features a whole host of employees of STAR Labs who know that Barry Allen is the Scarlet Speedster.

Likewise, just about every major character on Supergirl knows that Kara Danvers is really the Girl of Steel. Every character, that is, except her close friend Lena Luthor. It hasn’t been entirely clear whether Lex’s little sister had worked out that her pal and National City’s savior are one and the same or not, but while speaking to TVLine in a recent interview, exec producer Andrew Kreisberg confirmed that Lena – as played by Katie McGrath – has not put two and two together yet. “At the moment, Lena definitely thinks they’re two people,” he said.

Though Lena has treated Kara and Supergirl as if they were different people on the show, it wasn’t certain that she didn’t know the truth – she could have just been playing along. In the season 2 finale, it was revealed that Kara’s old boss and mentor Cat Grant has secretly known that her former assistant and favourite superhero are the same person for a while. Fans had thought that Lena might have had a similar realization but no, apparently Kara’s glasses really do fool some people. Still, with Katie McGrath being bumped up to regular character for season 3, we suspect that Lena will discover Kara’s secret identity very soon.

Supergirl returns on October 9th on The CW.
