Mark Hamill Surprised At How Rian Johnson Saw Luke In Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Back at Celebration in April, Mark Hamill chatted about Luke Skywalker's role in the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi and mentioned that he "fundamentally disagreed" with director Rian Johnson's interpretation of the character and his arc in the movie. The comment was a surprising one, as it sounded like Hamill was criticizing both the director and the film itself, and fans weren't sure what to make of it.

Back at Celebration in April, Mark Hamill chatted about Luke Skywalker’s role in the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi and mentioned that he “fundamentally disagreed” with director Rian Johnson’s interpretation of the character and his arc in the movie. The comment was a surprising one, as it sounded like Hamill was criticizing both the director and the film itself, and fans weren’t sure what to make of it.

Now, in a new interview with Variety that took place on the red carpet of the Tony Awards in New York City this week, Hamill’s clarified his original statement, explaining that his words were “inartfully phrased” and that he actually found it a “thrilling experience” to engage with Johnson’s view of Luke.

Hamill’s clarification is intriguing, as it suggests that we’ll be getting a radically different take on Luke in The Last Jedi. The trailer revealed that the character has lost his faith in the Jedi cause, but his transformation likely goes deeper than that if it was enough to shock Hamill. Could Luke turn to the Dark Side, as has been discussed by fans? Hamill himself has already teased that option, saying “anything is possible,” so who knows?

Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in theatres on December 15th.
