The Batman is a project still in its infancy.
Even after all the hullabaloo that engulfed the standalone pic back in February, which ultimately led to Matt Reeves landing the coveted gig, Warner Bros. is yet to set an official start date for The Batman – and is unlikely to do so until after Justice League launches into theatres in November.
Of course, much of that can also be attributed to Reeves’ ongoing commitment to War For the Planet of the Apes, the third blockbuster installment in Fox’s rebooted series. Word is that Matt Reeves and his team have crafted a sequel that is just as good – if not better – than the really rather brilliant Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. That critical consensus will be put to the test on July 14th, and in anticipation of War For the Planet lighting up theatres, ComicBook.com quizzed Matt Reeves on Caesar’s latest (and potentially greatest?) adventure, along with his creative approach to The Batman.
Look, I’m just starting Batman because literally, [War for the Planet of the Apes], as I just said, we finished about a we ago and now we’re publicizing it. So, we haven’t even begun on Batman. For me, what’s always important is to try and find a personal way in. In that way, I do feel like I relate to actors. It’s about understanding emotionally, the way something is. I see this parallel between Caesar and Batman, really, which is this idea of these characters who are grappling with their own struggle and trying to do the right thing in an imperfect world and, so, I do really relate it to that kind of idea.
Doing the right thing in an imperfect world is The Batman‘s bread and butter, though we’re more intrigued to see if those recent rumors claiming Reeves’ solo movie would tee up the advent of Red Hood prove to be true. Beyond the DCEU, War For the Planet of the Apes gallops into theatres on July 14th and will bring about the final chapter in Caesar’s story – for now, at least.
