Tom Holland’s Spider-Man suit is unique from Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s outfits as it’s touched up in post-production with CGI (e.g. the squinting eyes on the mask). For Avengers: Infinity War, however, the costume will be fully computer-generated for the first time. Instead of a practical red and blue outfit, Holland is wearing a motion-capture suit on set.
Fans had assumed that this technique meant that Peter Parker would don a different kind of Spidey suit in the movie. Perhaps the red and gold Iron Spider suit (designed by Tony Stark) from the comics, or possibly even the iconic black symbiote suit, to tie in with Sony’s Venom movie?
Unfortunately for those hoping to see these different threads on screen, Holland has now confirmed that this isn’t the case and Spidey will not be changing his wardrobe in any major way in Infinity War. He made the reveal during an interview with Italian site Bad Taste, when he said the following:
“No, it’s not going to be different. I don’t think so. It’s the same suit.”
As for why he’s wearing a MoCap suit, then, it turns out that it’s just easier to make the character a full CGI creation when there will already be so much CGI action going on around him – which makes sense.
“I think that’s because my suit sometimes when you’re doing stuff where so much CGI is happening behind you, it’s easier to CGI everything. I just show up and do as I’m told. So, I think that’s because CGI going on on that set that its easier to just paint the Homecoming suit onto my body rather than me wear and them have to paint over it.”
You can see Tom Holland in his first solo outing as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Homecoming, due out on July 7th. He’ll then return for the crossover extravaganza known as Avengers: Infinity War, which arrives in theatres on May 4th, 2018.
