Wonder Woman Cruising Toward Another Box Office Record

With a box office total just north of $600 million, Wonder Woman is on the verge of becoming the highest-grossing live-action movie directed by a woman.

Almost three weeks on from Wonder Woman‘s initial release and the Patty Jenkins standalone pic continues to exert its dominance at the international box office.

Indeed, once the film blew past early projections to score $103 million during its opening weekend in North America, many analysts quickly adjusted their forecasts and began wondering exactly how far the DC tentpole would climb. Pretty far, as it turns out.

Wonder Woman has not only surpassed $600 million worldwide, but it also has another box office record in its sights: to become the highest-grossing live-action movie directed by a female filmmaker. At the moment, that title belongs to Phyllida Lloyd’s Mamma Mia! (2008), but given that WW‘s total is now within touching distance of the film’s $609.8 million tally, it’s really a question of when, rather than if, Patty Jenkins’ critically-adorned movie will achieve said feat. And what a feat it is.

For the sake of perspective, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad earned $872 million and $745 million, respectively, and when you factor in strong word of mouth – Wonder Woman‘s BO takings dipped by only 43 percent during its second weekend, and a rather remarkable 29 percent during the third – there’s every chance that the Patty Jenkins-directed prequel could go on to become one of, if not the most financially successful film in the DC Extended Universe to date. No wonder Warner Bros. is soon keen to kick on with a sequel, one which will purportedly take place in the past, contrary to previous reports.

Imbued with power, grace, wisdom, and wonder, Patty Jenkins’ standalone Wonder Woman pic made its bow on June 2nd. Tell us, have you been a contributing factor to the film’s box office success? Or, if you’re one of the few that’s yet to see DC’s Diana Prince origin movie, what’s stopping you?
