Though the MCU is still quite far ahead of it, Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe is quickly beginning to take shape and with the franchise finally producing its first bonafide hit in the form of Wonder Woman, the future is definitely bright. Looking ahead, they’ve only got two upcoming films with firm release dates – Justice League this November and Aquaman next December – but a new report indicates that things might be about to ramp up significantly in terms of the output.
Yes, there’s obviously a whole handful of projects in development that we know about, but not much has been said about when we can expect to see them. If The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzalez is to be believed, though, it may be sooner than we think. That’s because the notorious tipster is claiming that the studio wants to start releasing 3 to 4 films per year. Speaking on his show Heroic Insider, here’s what he had to say:
“A lot of people been asking me what’s the next movie in 2018-2019. I know for a fact DC is trying to get 3 to 4 movies made a year moving forward.”
Unfortunately, Gonzalez doesn’t mention when exactly this production schedule is going to kick in. Will it be in 2019? 2020? We know that Batgirl, Nightwing, Gotham City Sirens and many, many more are all in various stages of development, but there’s been no word yet on when exactly the studio plans to release any of them. A Reddit leak from a while back pointed to 2019 bringing us the aforementioned Gotham City Sirens along with The Batman, Shazam and Man of Steel 2, but that obviously hasn’t been confirmed and should be taken with a massive grain of salt.
The other thing to consider here is do we even want 3-4 films from DC in one year? On the surface, the answer is probably yes. But when you think about it, that might not be the best approach. It seems like they’re rushing to catch up with Marvel, which isn’t the best idea. We’d rather see the studio take their time and slowly build out their cinematic universe in a meaningful manner rather than just push out as much content as they can.
3 can be done, if planned and executed properly, but 4 is ambitious and given that the DCEU‘s track record is still spotty, even despite Wonder Woman‘s success, we’re not sure if this is the route they should head down. Make no mistake about it, we’re all eager to see heroes like Batgirl, Green Lantern, Shazam and the rest debut on screen, but we want to see it done the correct way. After all, slow and steady wins the race, right?
