Although 3D showings are expected when it comes to theatrical releases for summer tentpoles and horror films these days, let’s not forget about those decades sandwiched between now and the science fiction boom of the 1950’s. In that time frame, you did get the stereoscopic experience here and there, but it was a bit more rare. Not surprisingly, studios would take advantage of the format with third entries in given franchises, as was the case with the focus of this article, Friday the 13th Part III.
Admittedly, this wasn’t the stuff you’d find in today’s visual effects marvels, but rather, a crafty way to present cheap scares and to take advantage of the rare opportunity to have some guy off-screen shaking branches at the viewer (I’m looking at you, Amityville 3-D). Still, this was a break from the norm and made some sequels that may have been otherwise overlooked at the time can’t miss events.
While Friday the 13th was a hot property back in the 1980’s, it was still very much in its infancy when it went 3D. Hell, some could argue that the third entry helped the franchise take off, with its goofy opening music that’s worth the price of admission alone, and for the introduction of Jason Voorhees’ now iconic hockey mask. Granted, the former may not be the best aural pleasure the series produced (that honor goes to the guy singing in the outhouse in the fifth film), but you may have a hard time resisting dancing in your seat at a special screening next month.
That’s right, as part of International House Philadelphia’s 3-Dementia event on Sunday, July 16, Friday the 13th Part III will be screen alongside four other cult favorites from the ’70s and ’80s in 35mm – and in 3D, to boot.
