Even before Peter Capaldi set foot in that iconic TARDIS, a vocal minority of Doctor Who fans considered his casting to be somewhat controversial. However that may be, by picking up the Sonic Screwdriver from the outgoing Matt Smith, Capaldi’s tenure as the Twelfth Doctor officially began in 2013, and in the intervening years since, the Scottish actor has slowly won over the naysayers – so much so, in fact, that showrunner Steven Moffat recently labeled Peter Capaldi to be the most emotional Doctor yet.
And now, as we stand on the verge of “The Doctor Falls,” Capaldi’s time at the forefront of Doctor Who is coming to a close. He’s set to go out with a bang, too, as these first-look pictures for Saturday’s finale attest. They’re relatively spoiler-free as well, so unless you’re wanting to go into “The Doctor Falls” with a totally blank slate, you’ll be able to flick through the gallery safe in the knowledge that you won’t be ruining any surprises ahead of time.
Moffat, who is also ready to part ways with Doctor Who following the upcoming Christmas Special – Chris Chibnall is expected to pick up the torch for series 11 – described Capaldi’s performance as so:
“Peter only has to think at the screen and you know what he’s thinking. He only has to move his face and I know the particular blend of Scottish torment he’s feeling right now. Despite trying to fight his emotions, he has given us the most emotional Doctor.”
Meanwhile, the next incarnation of the Time Lord remains a mystery, and don’t expect that to change until the show’s festive episode airs later this year. Speculation is rife about Capaldi’s inevitable replacement, and you can drop your own predictions down in the comments section below.
