Explaining The Post-Credits Scenes Of Spider-Man: Homecoming

It just wouldn't be an MCU movie if it didn't have one, or even, two scenes hidden within the end credits, would it? Now that Spider-Man has crossed over into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his newest solo film, Spider-Man: Homecoming carries on this grand tradition, just as expected. With the movie having arrived in cinemas in the UK already, we now know just what the two extra scenes to be found at the end of Homecoming entail. Still with us? Good. So, do Spider-Man: Homecoming's post-credits scenes tease any major developments to come in the sequel? Or do they just offer some welcome extra laughs? Well, as it turns out, it's a bit of both... Scene 1: The Scorpion Has Some Boys On The Outside The first post-credits scene follows on from the arrest of Adrian Toomes AKA Vulture at the end of the movie, courtesy of your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man, of course. While walking through the prison corridor, Toomes bumps into his old pal Mac Gargan, who he'd previously left for dead during his tussle with Spidey on the Staten Island ferry. Gargan says he doesn't blame Toomes. Instead, he wants revenge on Spider-Man. "I've got some boys on the outside who would love to meet him and slice his throat," says Gargan. "I heard a rumour you know who he is." Mac's heard right, as Vulture did indeed find out Peter Parker's secret identity earlier in the movie. Despite this, Vulture plays dumb. "If I did, he'd be dead," he says before strutting away, smiling. On the one hand, this scene does some good work in redeeming Toomes' character. After Spider-Man saved his life at the movie's climax, the villain has apparently gained a begrudging respect for the wallcrawler. It's unlikely that he's forgiven him completely, but he clearly thinks he deserves to do him one good turn. On the other hand, there's something much bigger being hinted at here. As comic book fans will know, Mac Gargan goes on to become the supervillain known as the Scorpion. In fact, actor Michael Mando himself confirmed that this was on the cards for his character a few days ago, via his Twitter account. https://twitter.com/MandoMichael/status/880195707512147968 So, it seems like a pretty safe bet, then, that Gargan will break out of jail in Homecoming 2, get himself a cool suit with a stinging tail and go hunt down the superhero who sent him down. But who are those "boys on the outside" that he mentioned? Well, we have a feeling that there might be six of them. Yes, Scorpion's comment has to be a hint that the Sinister Six will finally be forming on the big screen in the next Spider-Man solo movie. Sony has been trying to launch the supervillain team for a while now. If you'll recall, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 teased the group's creation ahead of a planned spinoff movie... which never happened after the cancellation of that franchise. Does this mean we'll meet big name villains like Doctor Octopus or Green Goblin in the sequel? We'll have to wait and see. Scene 2: Captain America Teaches Patience The second scene doesn't offer anything in the way of setting up what's to come, but it does feature a hilarious cameo from everyone's favourite star-spangled Avenger. Throughout the movie, Chris Evans pops up in character as Captain America in public service announcement videos that Peter's high school is required to show the kids. Going by Steve Rogers' outfit, they presumably hail from The Avengers era, before he went all rogue in the likes of The Winter Soldier and Civil War. Cap's Fitness Challenge video, for instance, has been glimpsed in the trailers. The best is saved until last, though. In a wonderfully fourth-wall breaking moment right at the end of the credits, Cap steps out in front of a white background in the style of one of his PSAs. This time around he decides to talk to us about patience, in a clear joke aimed at those of us who have sat through ten minutes of credits to see this scene. "I’m Captain America, here to talk to you about one of the most valuable traits a solider or student can have: patience. Sometimes it leads to very little and it seems like it’s not worth it. And you wonder why you waited so long…” Steve then hesitates and starts talking to someone off-camera: "How many of these have I go to do?" It's a brilliant scene, like the kind you might expect to see in Guardians of the Galaxy or Deadpool instead of a Spider-Man film. Having said that, it definitely feels apiece with the rest of Spider-Man: Homecoming, which aimed to take a fresh, fun approach to the age-old story of the webslinger. Now that we've seen it, we can confirm that it totally succeeded in doing that, too.
