At last, Call of Duty: WWII developer Sledgehammer Games has pulled back the blood-stained curtain on the shooter’s Nazi Zombies mode, revealing a horde of festering undead just waiting to be peppered with bullets.
For those that caught wind of the leaked trailer earlier this week, the official one (above) shown today at the San Diego Comic-Con contains much of the same footage, though there are a few notable differences. For starters, the Army of the Dead title that flashed up on screen at the conclusion of the leaked version has been replaced with the simpler, but no less self-explanatory, Nazi Zombies logo, a name that’s sure to delight fans of the original maps from Call of Duty: World at War.
Indeed, it’s been a while since fans have been able to enjoy the delights of downing endless waves of undead Third Reich soldiers, but as is the case with WWII as a whole, Sledgehammer is prioritizing a return to the series’ roots above all else for this year’s iteration, a total U-turn on 2016’s Infinite Warfare. Publisher Activision has been promising as much for a while now, and given the lukewarm reception (relative to Call of Duty, at least) Infinite Warfare received, tapping into fan nostalgia for the latest outing couldn’t have been a better decision.
In regards to setting, players will be heading off to the snowy Bavarian village of Mittelburg, Germany for their latest crusade against the undead, the goal of which is to recover priceless works of art stolen by the Axis powers during World War II. Sounds like a relatively simple gig, then, but don’t be fooled – the village holds the key to a dark secret, and it looks like you and your squad are going to be the first ones to discover the horrifying truth of the undead scourge.
