Humans, orcs, elves, fairies, and other mystical creatures all inhabit the same alternate universe in this wondrous full trailer for Bright, Netflix and David Ayer’s fantasy epic that made a big splash at San Diego Comic-Con.
Drawing from his experience on End of Watch, Ayer’s latest creative venture – one that purportedly came at the expense of his involvement in Universal’s Scarface – largely revolves around two mismatched LAPD cops: the orc Nick Jacoby (Joel Edgerton) and his very human partner-in-crime, Scott Ward (Will Smith). Working closely with the city’s remarkably diverse population, Smith and Edgerton’s leads attempt to peacefully coexist, but when a deadly weapon emerges to the fore, Jacoby and Ward must pull together to stop the City of Angels from descending into chaos.
What is it, exactly? Well, it’s an ancient wand capable of granting wishes at a moment’s notice, so you can imagine what kind of madness would ensue if that deadly artifact were to end up in the wrong hands. And at least based on Bright‘s full-length trailer, that’s exactly what transpires, after our leading duo crosses paths with a young, wise-beyond-her-years elf named Tikka (Lucy Fry).
What follows is a race against time, one which unfolds within a thriving, magical city where the real and fantastical blend together rather seamlessly, and it’s a credit to Bright‘s VFX team that the world itself feels real – tangible, even. As Will Smith’s cop says, “everyone’s just trying to get along and have a good life. All of the races are different. Just ’cause they’re different doesn’t mean anyone’s better or worse than anybody.”
Also on board for this potential franchise-starter are Alien: Covenant‘s Noomi Rapace, Edgar Ramirez, Ike Barinholtz, Enrique Murciano, Jay Hernandez, Andrea Navedo, Veronica Ngo, Alex Meraz, Margaret Cho, Brad William Henke, Dawn Olivieri and Kenneth Choi.
Bright is expected to launch on December 22nd. With a budget in excess of $90 million, one would assume that Netflix is hoping to fan the flames of franchise potential with David Ayer’s supernatural drama, so we’re intrigued to find out how it fares with subscribers later this year.
