First up, we now know that the pic will not be a contemporary piece but will be set in the 1990s. This isn’t the first time that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has taken a trip to the past, of course. Captain America: The First Avenger was set in World War II and Ant-Man established that Hank Pym had been superhero’ing since the 1960s.

In fact, fans will remember that back in 2008’s Iron Man, Nick Fury told Tony Stark that he wasn’t the only superhero around. Slowly but surely, we’re now finding out who those heroes were that existed before him.

Speaking of Fury, we’ve known for a while that Samuel L. Jackson’s S.H.I.E.L.D. head honcho will have a part to play in Captain Marvel, but the SDCC panel revealed a new detail about his role. Seeing as it’s set in the 90s, the movie will see Fury sans his iconic eyepatch and with two working eyes.

Perhaps most interesting of all, though, to hardcore Marvel fans is the announcement that Captain Marvel will feature the alien Skrulls as the villains of the piece. The shapeshifting green-skinned intergalactic meanies have been stalwarts of the Marvel comic book universe for decades, but it was previously assumed that Marvel Studios didn’t have the rights to them. Usually, the race has been tied into the Fantastic Four, who rest over at 2oth Century Fox. It seems that Marvel and Fox have engaged in a bit of back and forth behind the scenes though, which has ended up with the Skrulls entering the MCU.

Finally, the studio also unveiled some new pieces of concept art which give us our first look – if not a particularly clear one – at the outfit Brie Larson will wear as Carol Danvers. Take a look at them below:

Captain Marvel is set to arrives in cinemas March 8th, 2019.
