Michelle Gomez Open To Future Return For Missy In Doctor Who

It’s a true end of an era for Doctor Who this year. Not only is the Doctor himself, Peter Capaldi, leaving the series, but so is showrunner Steven Moffat. Seeing as her Doctor and the man who cast her were exiting the show, Michelle Gomez – who’s played the female Master Missy since 2014 – has decided to vacate as well.

However, it may not be the end of the character, as the actress has now suggested that Missy could return at some point in the future. Though she feels that she couldn’t act opposite a different Doctor at the moment, she’s open to finding out how that could work eventually.

Here’s what Gomez said at San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend (via Radio Times):

“It’s good to know when to leave the party. It was a jolly good party, but time to leave – and then maybe come back – but time to leave for now… It feels like this was a chapter – a perfect chapter, actually – with Steven [Moffat] and Peter [Capaldi]. I don’t know about being a Master to another Doctor. I feel very loyal to Peter and I don’t know how that would work, but I am willing to find out at a later date.”

Gomez was last seen in season 10 finale “The Doctor Falls,” which left things in a very final place for Missy. After at last deciding to stand with the Doctor and do good, she was shot in the back by her younger self (played by John Simm). Apparently, her ability to regenerate had been suspended, so we left her as she apparently died in the snow.

But this is the Master we’re talking about, the Doctor’s greatest nemesis who’s survived certain deaths numerous times over the decades. It’s clear the character will reappear at some point in the future then, but the big question is: will Gomez be in the role when it happens?

Doctor Who returns for Peter Capaldi’s last adventure in this year’s Christmas special.
