Responding to yesterday’s allegations, David Ayer has Tweeted out a single image of Harley Quinn, all but confirming that he’s still developing Gotham City Sirens for Warner Bros. and the DC Extended Universe.
Question marks began to loom over Ayer’s involvement in the ensemble project coming out of San Diego Comic-Con, where those Sirens – namely Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Catwoman, and Poison Ivy – were totally absent from Warner’s presentation. And that includes the crowd-pleasing sizzle reel that showcased all of the many superhero projects brewing at the studio, such as Aquaman, Shazam, Green Lantern Corps, Batgirl, Nightwing, and the recently-announced Wonder Woman 2, which will herald the return of Gal Gadot’s Immortal Warrior in December of 2019.
Couple this with the fact that David Ayer’s commitment to Bright, the fantasy-fuelled epic that may well spawn a franchise over at Netflix, forced him to pass up Universal’s Scarface remake and it’s no wonder ardent DC fans began to grow concerned following Mashable’s report. But at least based on Ayer’s latest Tweet, Gotham City Sirens is still alive and well – even if the female-led project is still without a release window to call its own. Of course, that is assuming that the following picture, which was Tweeted out by the director without so much as a caption, stands as a symbol of his continued loyalty to Gotham’s leading ladies.
Another point worth keeping in mind is that Ayer seemingly chose this project over Suicide Squad 2, which has now set sights on Jaume Collet-Serra as a potential replacement ahead of a mid-2018 start. It’ll likely launch into theaters before Gotham City Sirens, which will now have to accommodate David Ayer’s busy schedule before Margot Robbie, who is set to produce and star in the film as the wicked Harley Quinn, slips back into that famous anti-hero guise.
