After a stop-start production process, Star Trek: Discovery – the latest TV iteration of the Trek franchise – is finally about to debut on our screens. To celebrate its arrival in this galaxy, Entertainment Weekly‘s new issue is sporting three variant covers of the series’ stars, showcasing the prominent female characters that will headline the show. These covers look great, make no mistake about it, but the tagline for the issue has grated many Star Trek fans. “Where no woman has gone before” is a nice reference to the fact that Discovery has a female lead character, but it does seem to forget that the franchise has had one before. Kate Mulgrew played Captain Kathryn Janeway on Star Trek: Voyager, which ran for an impressive seven seasons from 1995 to 2001. Come on, EW, you must know that.

The cover shoot also came with some interviews with the show’s cast: Martin-Green, Yeoh, Jason Isaacs (who plays Captain Gabriel Lorca), Shazad Latif (Lieutenant Tyler) and more. You can check it all out via the link below, but Martin-Green notes that fans should expect something different here, as the show is “going where no iteration has gone before.”

“This iteration of Stat Trek is boldly going – it’s not just a tagline,” teases the former The Walking Dead actress. “We are boldly going where no iteration has gone before. As each iteration has and should.”

It might not be the first to have a female lead, but Star Trek: Discovery will definitely be unique in one vital way: it will be available via digital streaming on CBS All Access. It lands on September 24th and will then be released in other countries on Netflix from Monday the 25th.

It’s a gamble for CBS to launch the show online, as it could backfire in a big way, but assuming fans flock to All Access and Netflix in droves, Star Trek: Discovery should live long and prosper.
