Colin Trevorrow is no doubt feeling a good deal of pressure at the moment. After J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens kicked the new wave of Star Wars films off in spectacular fashion, all eyes are now on Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi, which is generating an enormous amount of buzz – mostly of the positive variety. It’s fully expected to be another smash hit for Disney then and as such, it’ll be up to Trevorrow to close the trilogy out on a high note, keeping up the momentum already put in place by his predecessors.
With Star Wars: Episode IX still so far out though, we really don’t know anything about it just yet, but make no mistake, things are starting to heat up now ahead of the film’s January 2018 production start. In fact, The Hollywood Reporter is telling us today that the blockbuster has found itself a new writer in Jack Thorne, who’ll be coming on board to polish Trevorrow and Derek Connolly’s script.
Though he doesn’t have any major credits to his name at the moment, Thorne is definitely on the rise, with a few hot projects in development, including an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman. Disney obviously saw something in him that they liked and he’s now landed the job of handing in a rewrite.
What exactly he’ll be focusing on is unclear, and this news shouldn’t indicate that the studio’s unhappy with what’s already there. After all, this kind of thing is pretty common. Still, it makes us wonder just what Thorne will be doing to Trevorrow and Connolly’s existing script and which parts need to be rewritten.
Unfortunately, it might be some time before we learn anything more about Star Wars: Episode IX, as it’s not due to fly into theatres until May 24th, 2019. Before then, however, we can look forward to The Last Jedi, which will be with us on December 15th.
