“It’s possible, anything’s possible.” That’s Mark Hamill there addressing the possibility of Luke Skywalker falling prey to the dark side of the Force in this year’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Those comments came back in April, when Hamill partook in the annual Star Wars Celebration event in Anaheim to ring in the franchise’s 40th anniversary. Striking while the iron was still piping hot, Disney and Lucasfilm also chose to unveil The Last Jedi‘s ominous first teaser, in which Luke utters the by-now infamous line: “It’s time for the Jedi…to end.” Cue the speculation.
Sure enough, the Star Wars community has been dreaming up weird and wonderful fan theories based on that single line of dialogue ever since, fuelling rumors that Luke Skywalker is about to descend into villainy – not unlike Ben Solo (AKA Kylo Ren) or his father, Anakin Skywalker, before him. Without any official comment from Disney and/or director Rian Johnson, this speculation will no doubt continue to rage right up until Star Wars: The Last Jedi debuts on December 15th.
Now, adding more fuel to the fire is Making Star Wars, who’ve partnered with an artist known as Sharna to illustrate two alleged theatrical posters for Johnson’s sci-fi sequel. Embedded below, each one-sheet is drenched in a blood-red glow – ditto for the film’s title, which is purportedly singular – and takes stylistic cues from Empire Strikes Back.
The first, aptly titled “hero poster,” depicts Luke Skywalker as a loyal ally to Rey and the Resistance, watching over Daisy Ridley’s Jedi-in-training with that signature bushy beard. However, the second poster is much more ominous, as it finds Mark Hamill’s Jedi Master staring out from underneath a jet-black hood. It’s a look befitting a Sith Lord, or indeed any other galaxy member that aligns with the First Order, so take from that what you will.
Of course, it’s important to stress that these sketches from Making Star Wars aren’t indicative of the film’s final theatrical posters, but we’ll be keeping a close eye on this story nevertheless.
