Marvel’s spacefaring A-holes are bound for Blu-ray and DVD – August 22nd is the date for your diaries – and to celebrate, Collider caught up with writer-director James Gunn to talk all things Guardians, and what the future holds for Star-Lord and the gang.
Beyond the release of Avengers: Infinity War in 2018, we know that Marvel has already committed to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2020, perhaps?), and if you’re at all familiar with Gunn’s output, it will come as no surprise for you to learn that the writer-director is already hard at working composing Vol. 3.
Now in possession of a spec script, we’ve caught wind of Adam Warlock‘s introduction (finally!), while James Gunn has also name-dropped Quasar as another possible recruit. Whether those plans fall into place remains to be seen, but here, the filmmaker recounts the challenges of penning Guardians 3 while speaking with Collider.
It’s been pretty easy. The truth is, the first movie is the first act, the second movie is the second act, and the third movie is the third act so I’m tying a lot of stuff together in the third film. We get a lot of answers on a lot of different things, so doing that in an elegant way takes a little bit of grace and elegance. It’s more challenging in that respect writing the third movie than the second movie.
Gunn then went on to discuss his writing process in general, and how he tends to draw up “an incredibly in-depth treatment” for every project that he takes on.
“I think of writing a screenplay as creating the body of a human being and you’ve got to start with the skeleton, start with the bones, and you create the bones. You take a lot of time because that’s the actual base of the movie and if you screw that part up, later on down the line, you’re going to have a lot of mistakes. So by creating a really strong foundation for the story, that’s the most important thing. So I write a good treatment that’s probably about 70 pages long. It includes photographs and things like that. So that has been the way I’ve dealt with every movie and this one as well.”
From August 8th, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be available on Digital HD and 4K Ultra HD, before James Gunn’s rip-roaring sequel expands to Blu-ray on August 22nd. Next up for Marvel’s dysfunctional family is the release of Avengers: Infinity War on May 4th, 2018. And after that? Avengers 4, which is reportedly due to begin filming next month ahead of its own launch in 2019.
