Cyborg’s Troubled Relationship With His Father Will Factor Into Justice League; Solo Movie Still Targeting 2020

Joe Morton, the actor on board to play Dr. Silas Stone, has shed new light on Cyborg's father-son relationship in Justice League and the planned solo movie.

Victor Stone is no ordinary human being.

Much like his fellow Justice League members, Ray Fisher’s mechanized fighter is classed as a metahuman, and one of the few able to guard Earth against the invading Steppenwolf. Built in the bowels of the Red Room by his father, Dr. Silas Stone, Victor is fitted with experimental prosthetics when a horrible accident leaves him on the brink of death, leaving his old man with little choice but to engineer Victor into a human-cyborg hybrid.

That arc was briefly teased in last year’s Batman V Superman, though we’re now learning that Justice League will delve deeper into the troubled history of Victor and his madcap genius of a father. Chatting to CBM, Joe Morton offered some insight into that father-son dynamic, including why Cyborg holds a grudge against Stone Senior for turning him into a machine.

Yeah, some of that still exists in the film where Victor sort of feels like, ’yes you saved my life, but look what you made me look like. I can’t go out and be a regular person.’ He has no alias, nothing to hide behind. So what I think is great about that idea is you begin, in a metaphoric way, sort of talking about what it means to be “the other” in society. Even if you have something tremendous to contribute to society, the first thing that most social situations will do is ostracize you because you look different because they don’t know who or what you are. So I think that’s a big deal in this film for that character, and for Silas, and makes for interesting film making.

On the topic of the Cyborg solo movie, Morton noted that it’s still on the cards, despite a no-show at San Diego Comic-Con last month.

As far as I know it is still happening. I believe, although I’m not entirely sure, that it should start sometime around 2020. That seems to be a wonderful metaphoric year for these Cyborgs.

With a vague 2020 release date in place, that standalone pic is all set to become the third movie in Morton’s three-picture deal with Warner Bros., who told CBM the following:

It was set up as a three picture deal. The first being Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, the second one being Justice League and the third one being the Cyborg film. So that’s how it’s been set up, but it’s all contingent on how these movies do. And so far, Wonder Woman did really well, and we’re hoping that Justice League does equally as well.

Justice League hits theaters on November 17th, and once the war against Steppenwolf has reached its conclusion, and Aquaman, Wonder Woman 2 and presumably Shazam have all graced theaters, Warner Bros. will launch the Cyborg spinoff movie in 2020. Stay tuned for more on that front.
