The Star Wars universe is on a seemingly unstoppable roll at the moment, and that looks set to continue well into the future. After the smashing success of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and with a Han Solo prequel now in development, Lucasfilm has gone ahead and announced their next spinoff. And no surprises for guessing what it is.

Yes, as we all predicted, it’ll revolve around none other than Obi-Wan Kenobi and as THR tells us, Stephen Daldry is in talks to direct. From what we understand, the project is without a script and still in the very, very early stages of development. As such, it’s unclear if Ewan McGregor will pick up the lightsaber for this Star Wars offshoot, though given how keen the Scot has been in the past, we’re inclined to believe McGregor will sign on without a second’s hesitation.

Because after six appearances across Disney and Lucasfilm’s rebooted Skywalker saga, Obi-Wan Kenobi has become a bona fide fan-favorite among the Star Wars community. Originally portrayed by the late, great Alec Guinness across episodes IV, V, and VI, Ewan McGregor donned those iconic Jedi robes all throughout the prequel saga, and was arguably one of the few highlights to be gleaned from The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith.

“Hello there!” At long last, the Mouse House has ordered a Star Wars standalone pic for the great Jedi Master himself, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Further details on the nascent spinoff are yet to be revealed, but we’ll be keeping a close eye on this project as it begins to coalesce under Stephen Daldry – assuming he signs on to direct, of course.

Elsewhere, Lucasfilm’s rejuvenated juggernaut marches on with the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi on December 15th, while Ron Howard’s untitled Han Solo pic is expected to arrive in May of next year. And after that? Episode IX in 2019, which leads us to believe that Disney is possibly targeting a 2020 release for its newly-unveiled Obi-Wan movie. As always, watch this space for more.
