Now simmering in the latter stages of post-production, The Last Jedi is coming together at a brisk clip – even if Lucasfilm isn’t quite ready to unveil the sequel’s first full trailer. Nevertheless, and in maintaining his relatively open dialogue with the impassioned Star Wars community, Johnson took to Instagram late last night to share an explosive, monochromatic image from the edit.

Embedded below, the screenshot appears to be taken from one of the film’s Herculean space battles; in fact, it may be directly related to that war between the First Order and the Resistance that was briefly teased in The Last Jedi‘s inaugural trailer. Bear in mind that Episode VIII is yet to cross the finish line, which means Johnson and his creative team will be fine-tuning and color-correcting each and every frame right up until the deadline. As a result, there’s a very small chance this action shot won’t make the cut, though given Rian Johnson shared it via social media – not to mention the sheer spectacle on display – we’re inclined to believe that this particular image won’t be wasted.

Per Instagram:

Because it’s masked in a black-and-white filter, it’s also a little hard to determine exactly what’s going on. Assuming this is a gigantic fireball and not waves though, there’s a very good chance it’s an up-close look at one of the First Order’s (or indeed the Resistance’s) ships exploding into a million pieces. Either way, it won’t be too long before we have some definitive answers.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi lights up theaters on December 15th and is one of three major Star Wars projects in active development – the other two being Lucasfilm’s Han Solo origin story and the so-far untitled Episode IX. An Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff is also on the cards (finally!), though given it’s still in search of a writer and script, it’ll be sometime yet before Stewjon’s wise old Jedi Master returns to the fray.
