As we prepare for the digital release of the hit film Wonder Woman on August 29th, a brief teaser for a previously unseen ‘Epilogue’ scene has arrived on Twitter – focusing on the character of Etta Candy, played by Lucy Davis. Details of the scene have already been announced, but this snippet is our first glimpse of a moment that’s potentially very significant for the cohesion of the DC Extended Universe.
Titled Etta’s Mission, it’s been previously reported that “Etta Candy gets the boys back together for a secret mission that could impact humanity’s future.” Now, we can see that Sameer (Said Taghmaoui) and Charlie (Ewen Bremner) are the boys in question, and Etta seems to assemble them in the same London pub in which Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) and Diana (Gal Gadot) found them in the movie.
The aspect of this epilogue that’s most intriguing is the nature of the mission, though, and the way in which it fits within the overall narrative of the DCEU. It’s notable that the font used for the title cards of the scene is that used for Justice League, as opposed to Wonder Woman, which leads to speculation as to whether Etta’s Mission involves the introduction of ‘Mother Boxes’ and the potential threat of Darkseid and his Apokolips forces. The notion that the mission “could impact humanity’s future” further suggests this link.
Whatever the nature of her mission, it’s heartening to see Etta Candy in the spotlight at last. Her role in the theatrical release of the film was significant, but limited in comparison to the part she’s played in the comic book history of Wonder Woman. She first appeared in Sensation Comics #2 in 1942, created by William Moulton Marston and H.G Peter, and quickly became confidante, sidekick, and best friend of Diana. She’s a formidable warrior in her own right, though, and over the years has been seen to storm a Nazi concentration camp, travel through space and to Hell, and progress from Air Force Lieutenant to the position of Commander.
In the first season of the 1976 television series Wonder Woman, Etta Candy was played by Beatrice Colen, and the character was voiced by Julianne Grossman in the animated movie Wonder Woman in 2009. It’s the performance of Lucy Davis, in Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, that’s truly brought Etta Candy into the spotlight, though – and we can now look forward to a further adventure with her as we settle in for Etta’s Mission.
