Even before numerous reports promised us that Justice League would be a much lighter movie than Zack Snyder’s previous DCEU efforts, Man of Steel and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, we knew that Ezra Miller would be providing the comic relief as the Flash.
Going back to our first look at the film at San Diego Comic-Con 2016, Miller’s interpretation made an instant impression on fans. His giddy reaction to being asked by Bruce Wayne to join his team – “Stop right there, I’m in!” – proved that he was going to be a very different hero from the much more sombre Superman and Batman.
Now, in a new interview with Total Film Magazine (via ComicBook.com), Ezra Miller has elaborated on how he envisions Barry Allen, and he likened the character to a massive fanboy who gets to join his favourite band – even if he can’t play any instruments.
“He’s [like] the 13-year-old Metallica fan, and Metallica says, ‘We lost our drummer in a freak accident. We need you to play drums, bro!’ [And he’s like] ‘I don’t even have drumsticks!’”
We’ve already got an idea of what Miller’s talking about thanks to this year’s Comic-Con trailer. Though Barry is clearly overjoyed to be rubbing shoulders with all-star heroes like Wonder Woman and Batman, in one moment he does open up about his insecurities. “It’s really cool that you guys are ready to do battle and stuff,” he confides in Batman. “But I’ve never done battle. I’ve just pushed some people and run away.”
As we know from his cameo in Suicide Squad, where he foiled Captain Boomerang’s bank robbery, the Flash is only a small-scale vigilante at this point in his crime-fighting career. During Zack Snyder/Joss Whedon’s upcoming pic, though, Barry Allen will no doubt have some sort of character arc where he proves himself a hero.
We’ll see how the Fastest Man Alive helps save the world when Justice League arrives on November 17th.
