Despite featuring quite heavily in the film’s humungous marketing campaign two years back, Captain Phasma (AKA the Chrometrooper of the First Order) was woefully underused in The Force Awakens, which only has us all the more excited for her return in December’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Brought to life by Game of Thrones stalwart Gwendoline Christie, Phasma is one of Snoke’s loyal disciples, and is often seen leading a squadron of Stormtroopers into battle. From what we understand, The Last Jedi will go one step further to explore a little more of Phasma’s backstory and, presumably, how she was involved in the destruction of Luke’s Jedi Academy. Remember, Christie’s fan-favorite was seen walking out of the flames in Rey’s Force dream, and that same shot was incorporated into the sequel’s inaugural teaser.
But until we have some definitive answers for you, Star Wars News Net has today unearthed new evidence that suggests Captain Phasma won’t be unmasked in Star Wars: The Last Jedi after all. Coming out of the film’s candid Vanity Fair shoot, in which Phasma was pictured without her chrome helmet to show off Gwendoline Christie, some fans assumed that her character would be ditching the headgear come December. Alas, that’s not the case.
Pointing to The Last Jedi‘s merchandise material, which is due to receive a huge push ahead of Force Friday II, the outlet revealed that artists are under strict orders not to unveil Phasma’s face.
You cannot show Phasma unmasked. Captain Phasma’s mask stays on during the film so do not send in artwork of Gwendoline Christie’s face.
Directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be with us on December 15th. Other projects gestating in Lucasfilm’s iconic galaxy far, far away include the untitled Han Solo origin story – helmed by Ron Howard, it’s on course to hit theatres on May 25th, 2018 – and Star Wars: Episode IX, the Colin Trevorrow-directed sequel that will herald the latest (and final?) chapter in the Skywalker saga come 2019. There’s also the newly-unveiled Obi-Wan anthology pic, though it’s still incubating in the formative stages of development.
