Not unlike Wonder Woman before him, Marvel’s Spider-Man enjoyed a huge splash in 2017 thanks to the release and subsequent success of Homecoming, the Jon Watts-directed reboot that ushered Tom Holland’s Peter Parker into the MCU with aplomb.

Indeed, such was the air of confidence surrounding Spider-Man: Homecoming that just prior to its release, the Powers That Be earmarked a release date for the untitled follow-up: July 5th, 2019. Yes, it appears Diana Prince won’t be the only costumed crusader headlining a superhero-themed sequel in two years’ time.

However, when it comes to Spidey’s next solo outing, which is due to arrive after both Avengers: Infinity War and the so-far unnamed Avengers 4, we know that Jon Watts has officially entered negotiations to return at the helm. The former Cop Car director is yet to sign along the dotted line, but we’re now hearing that Homecoming‘s writing duo – namely Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers – are on the verge of climbing aboard, too.

The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, revealing that both McKenna and Sommers have now opened talks with Marvel and Sony about the possibility of scripting Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 ahead of its release in 2019. Details are few and far between, but it’s clear all involved want to retain the same personnel that engineered a global hit early last month. As things stand, Homecoming is presiding over a box office haul north of $727 million, and that’s before you even factor China into the equation – for the record, Jon Watts’ standalone pic is due to drop in the territory on September 8th, as these zany international posters attest.

And yes, given his current Marvel contract spans three solo movies, Tom Holland will be back in action as the Web-Head once Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 scurries into theaters on July 5th, 2019. It’ll be emerging from the shadow of Infinity War and Avengers 4, which are due to arrive on May 4th, 2018 and May 3rd, 2019, respectively.
