The Thor: Ragnarok media blowout continues unabated, as numerous outlets publish their set reports and in turn, unleash a treasure chest of new details on the hugely anticipated threequel. Throughout the course of the day we’ve heard about everything from a possible cameo by the Guardians of the Galaxy to where exactly on the MCU timeline the film will take place. But it doesn’t end there. Not at all.
While chatting to director Taika Waititi on the set of the upcoming blockbuster, Screen Rant dove into how Ragnarok will put its titular hero through a tough ordeal, one that will completely change him.
Well, he’s a lot grubbier here. That’s been one of my main things… I think everyone’s a bit too shiny and clean in the other films. So we’re just trying to… I love heroes that really go through ordeals, and they come out the other end completely changed, not just ‘Oh I’ve got a girlfriend now.’ They come out the other side, they’ve been through the ringer.
Continuing on, Waititi noted that Thor can never go back from the events of the film, suggesting that they could significantly impact both the character and perhaps the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole moving forward.
We do a lot to this character in this film. And you know, a lot of people have been wanting to see this idea of Ragnarok. A lot of people are excited by the idea of what Ragnarok means. But to me, it means stripping down the establishment of what’s already there, and then building it up in a new way. Which is almost like this cyclic idea of Ragnarok.
So there’s my own personal idea of Ragnarok: what we’re doing to the character and to the franchise, and to the story. But in a way where what comes out the other end is way more exciting and interesting. And in a way, you can never go back from that.
Stripped of his prized Mjölnir and banished to the outer regions of the Nine Realms, Marvel’s God of Thunder will soon embark on a “journey of self-discovery,” as he cobbles together a team of reluctant heroes – namely Loki, Valkyrie and the Incredible Hulk – to restore Asgard to its former glory.
No hammer, no problem? Thor: Ragnarok will be with us on November 3rd, and it’ll seemingly herald the “fight of the century.”
