Amityville: The Awakening Creeps Out Of Hiding With First Clip; Horror Pic To Release Via Google Play Next Month

Emerging from a prolonged spell in production, Amityville: The Awakening has returned to the fray, and it's brought its first clip to mark the occasion.

Every house may have a history, but when it comes to 112 Ocean Avenue, it’s imbued with horror and hearsay.

We are, of course, referring to Amityville, New York’s most famous haunted house first depicted in Jay Anson’s 1977 book of the same name. Fast forward 40 years and 112 Ocean Avenue continues to be a point of fixation for Hollywood suits, given Amityville: The Awakening is all set to become the 19th (!) film based on the horror saga and the first to see a theatrical release since 2005, so there’s quite a lot riding on The Awakening.

Directed by Franck Khalfoun, Amityville: The Awakening keeps things on the straight and narrow by centering on a young woman, Belle (Bella Thorne), who takes up residence in a new home only to find that it’s haunted by a strange, inexplicable phenomenon. Cue the jump-scares and shrill music.

But with a late October release right around the corner, The Weinstein Company has now summoned the very first clip for Khalfoun’s long-brewing thriller, and you’ll be able to take a peek up above. In tandem with this long-awaited reveal, there’s also news that The Awakening will debut exclusively (and free of charge!) for a limited time on Google Play between October 12th to November 8th for those in North America.

Originally earmarked for a release in January of 2015 – and no, that’s not a typo – Amityville: The Awakening has been beset with scheduling woes; in fact, it’s been delayed no less than five times since its inception. It doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in a film that’s attempting to pump fresh blood into a dormant franchise, but we’ll reserve any criticism until the lights go down on October 28th.

Here’s the logline:

Belle (Bella Thorne) and her family after they move into their new home, but when strange phenomena begin to occur in the house, Belle begins to suspect her mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh) isn’t telling her everything. She soon realizes they just moved into the infamous Amityville house where between illusion and reality lies evil.

Also starring Cameron Monaghan, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Thomas Mann, Jennifer Morrison and Kurtwood Smith, Amityville: The Awakening will finally see a release on October 28th. Dimension Films is backing the long-in-development feature, which now faces stiff competition from high-profile genre fare in the form of Jigsaw and Leatherface.
