According to figures posted by Box Office Mojo, Spider-Man: Homecoming is now the highest-grossing superhero movie of 2017 with $874 million worldwide, which puts the Jon Watts-directed reboot just ahead of Marvel’s other marquee release, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($863 million). For the record, Wonder Woman comes in third on the list of costumed crusaders with $819 million, while the rampaging It continues to gobble up one record after another now that New Line’s R-rated horror has reached $477 million.

Remaining in Hollywood’s superhero genre, though, and Spider-Man: Homecoming made a late charge thanks to its delayed release in China. This weekend alone, Homecoming collected close to $8 million at the worldwide box office, with most of those tickets being purchased in the aforementioned territory. Overall, this impressive tally places Spider-Man: Homecoming at fifth place on the MCU standings, though the zippy, critically-acclaimed revival has a long way to go if it’s to topple Captain America: Civil War ($1.15 billion). Also of note, this last-minute surge puts Spidey’s latest big-screen adventure ahead of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which pulled in a grand total of $872 million early last year.

As for the future of Marvel’s rejuvenated Spider-Man series, Tom Holland and the gang will return in 2019 for the untitled sequel, while a small role in next year’s Avengers: Infinity War is also cramming up the pipeline. The young British actor, who has also signed to play the young Nathan Drake in Sony’s Uncharted movie, is currently contracted to a solo trilogy revolving around the Web-Head, so it’s all but certain that a third Homecoming movie will see a release at some point in Marvel’s Phase 4. Or Phase 5, perhaps?

So, there you have it; the tickets have been counted and the numbers have been finalized: Spider-Man: Homecoming has been crowned as 2017’s highest-grossing superhero movie worldwide.
