Pearl Mackie Not Ruling Out A Return To Doctor Who

One of the joys of Doctor Who is that, thanks to the handy plot device of time travel, characters from the past can return whenever there's a call for it. Just look at this year's season 10, when John Simm's incarnation of the Master made a comeback in the two-part finale after seven years away.

Of course, it all depends on whether the actors are willing to jump back into the TARDIS. Thankfully, they usually are due to the unique fun that being in Doctor Who brings – a rare exception is Christopher Eccleston, who only did one year as the Ninth Doctor in 2005. That’s not a worry with outgoing companion Pearl Mackie, though, as she’s now said that she’s leaving the door open for a return at some point.

Mackie is just the latest Doctor Who star to tease a comeback. Yesterday, news arrived that Alex Kingston wants to return as River Song to meet the latest incarnation of her husband wife, as played by Jodie Whittaker. Likewise, Sense8 star Freema Agyeman echoed Mackie’s words recently when she said “never say never” to reprising her role as Martha Jones, which she last played opposite David Tennant in 2010.

The actress behind Bill Potts has also teased some more details about the upcoming Christmas special. While Mackie warns fans that there will be tears aplenty, she also says it will be about “new beginnings” as well as endings.

“I’d say have a box of tissues close at hand. As to be expected: it’s Peter’s last episode as the Doctor and my last episode as well. There’s new beginnings – you’ve got new beginnings with [next Doctor] Jodie Whittaker – it’s a great adventure with two Doctors, it’s going to be very exciting, it’s going to be a lovely episode.”

Doctor Who‘s Christmas special, “Twice Upon a Time” arrives on December 25th.
