Unless you attended Cannes this past May (or are a member of a particularly edgy book club), you may not have heard of the buzz surrounding We Need To Talk About Kevin.

The film, which is based on Lionel Shriver’s 2005 award-winning novel, is a dramatic thriller starring Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly and Ezra Miller. The story studies the aftermath of a school shooting and whether a woman’s (Swinton) ambivalence at becoming a parent and eventual troubled relationship with her son (Miller) turned him into a sociopath.

Despite some mixed reviews at Cannes, the film is creating a buzz not only due to its subject matter but because it will be director Lynne Ramsey‘s first film since 2002’s festival darling Morvern Callar.

Hopes are high for the film and many say it will be an Oscar contender not only for Ramsey but also for Swinton, who’s wowing critics with her performance.

We Need To Talk About Kevin will make its North American debut at September’s Toronto International Film Festival and begin a slow release roll out across Europe beginning at the end of September before opening in the U.S. and Canada on December 2.
