One year after Brie Larson was announced in the titular role, Marvel Studios took to the stage at San Diego Comic-Con to offer new intel on its long-brewing Captain Marvel spinoff movie, telling us all about its 1990s setting, the Skrulls, and the addition of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.
Why the ’90s, you ask? Well, according to Kevin Feige, Captain Marvel‘s time period was decided early on in the development process, which is rather fitting when you consider that it’s due to release in between two of the studio’s biggest movies yet: Avengers: Infinity War and its as-yet-untitled sequel. Ever since the reveal, though, the film’s setting has led to one big question: where has Carol Danvers been throughout all of the MCU flicks we’ve seen thus far?
Unfortunately, we don’t have a definite answer to that just yet, but i09 recently posted the question to Feige. Of course, he wouldn’t spill too much, but when the outlet mentioned that it might be confusing for audiences to have such a powerful character out there in the MCU and then all of the sudden introduce her out of nowhere, he replied with: “The key is…out there,” and put his arms in the air.
Of course, that’s hardly much to go on, but it would seem that the producer is indicating that Captain Marvel has been out in space this whole time, likely attending to other business. Granted, we may be reading a bit too much into things, but this does seem to be the general consensus amongst fans, and would make sense given what we already know about Infinity War and the galactic threat that is Thanos.
Dubbed the “bridge between two worlds,” what we can tell you about the film with 100% certainty is what we mentioned before. That being that Captain Marvel will finally factor the Skrulls into the equation. Those shape-shifting alien nasties have been a mainstay of the Marvel comics for generations, so it’ll be fascinating to watch how newly-appointed directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck incorporate them into their Brie Larson-fronted spinoff when it makes a beeline for theaters on March 8th, 2019.
Although, if online speculation is to be believed, we could be seeing Carol Danvers make her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe even sooner. Leaked set photos from Avengers: Infinity War pointed to the inclusion of an Air Force installation in Joe and Anthony Russo’s mega-budget epic, and though she wasn’t mentioned in the film’s first teaser whatsoever, we’ll find out for sure once the aforementioned blockbuster opens on May 4th of next year.
