“I have seen gods fly. I’ve seen men build weapons that I couldn’t even imagine. I’ve seen aliens drop from the sky…but I have never seen anything like this. How much more are you hiding?”
That’s Everett Ross there, staring on in disbelief as he begins to uncover the fictional, radically advanced nation of Wakanda. It’s poised to be the beating heart of Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther spinoff, and with just under four months to go until release, Marvel has today peeled back the curtain on a new and tantalizing trailer. And let’s just say it was worth the wait.
Not since San Diego Comic-Con 2017 have we got a glimpse of Black Panther in motion, and we’re pleased to report that this latest promo is light on spoilers and heavy on eye-popping spectacle. For a film that largely centers on a far-flung and extraordinarily wealthy nation, Ryan Coogler’s standalone pic was always going to be laden with CGI, but thanks to the A-list cast (more on that later) coupled with a truly intriguing power struggle between T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and his adversaries, Black Panther may well live up to those sky-high expectations.
And so, once Ross is finished gushing about Wakanda and its many secrets, the footage cuts straight into T’Challa’s home world, before we get an up-close look at Boseman’s suit of armor. Equipped with all kinds of bells and whistles, the real money shot sees Wakanda’s would-be king dropping down from an aircraft to intercept a convoy of military vehicles (Ross, perhaps?), while there’s also another glimpse at the film’s much-touted chase sequence in Seoul.
If it’s more details you’re after, look no further than the official synopsis below:
T’Challa returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King. However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T’Challa’s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk.
Starring Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o (The Last Jedi), Martin Freeman, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker and Andy Serkis, Black Panther will debut in UK theaters first on February 9th, before clawing its way into US theaters on February 16th.
