We’re still a long ways away from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but as the Marvel Cinematic Universe gets ready to close out Phase 3 over the next couple of years, we’re beginning to hear just how important James Gunn’s threequel is going to be to the franchise. Spoiler alert: it’ll play a key role in kickstarting the new story that’s set to shape Phase 4.

Of course, plot details and the like for the film are still scarce, but excitement is understandably high. After all, this is a journey that began with the release of the original Guardians of the Galaxy three years ago, and though it was deemed to be an exercise in risk-taking at the outset, Star-Lord and the gang have since cemented their place as some of the most likable characters populating the MCU – the sheer love and fandom generated by Baby Groot alone is a testimony to the Guardians’ prevalence.

We don’t expect to learn anything substantial about Vol. 3 for some time – especially since Marvel has SO many movies to release before then – but being the good guy he is, James Gunn took to Instagram this week to post the below update, which came with a caption that tells us he’s written almost 70 pages of the script treatment.

Yes the bedhead is particularly out-of-control this morning, but I thought it was important to share my new #Groot mug with you. About to sit down with a cup of joe to work on – and almost finish – the first full draft of the #GuardiansoftheGalaxy Vol. 3 treatment – almost 70 pages. What are you guys up to? . #marvel #jamesgunn #writing #writinglife #screenwriting #gotg #gotgvol3

Of course, this is hardly a status report to stop the presses, but Gunn’s constant communication with fans via his social media feeds is always appreciated, and it’s good to know that he’s hard at work on the threequel. If nothing else, it’s simply a sign that the director will be keeping us fully up to date throughout the film’s production, and we certainly look forward to hearing more from him.

As for what we know about Vol. 3 so far? Well, for starters, it’s been confirmed that it’ll be the final bow for both Gunn as director and the entire team of Guardians – meaning Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), etc. We also know that it’ll explore the cosmic side of the Marvel universe more in depth. Going by the teases in Vol. 2, it’ll also likely feature a bigger role for Sylvester Stallone’s Stakar and finally introduce Adam Warlock. Lastly, Gunn’s hinted that another Marvel superhero, Quasar, will make an appearance in the film, too, though that remains unconfirmed for now.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is yet to be assigned an official release date, but the director’s assured us it’ll likely arrive sometime in 2020. As always, watch this space for more.
