Out of the many, many dream crossovers that fans hold out hope for seeing happen at some point, there’s one that we can say with absolute certainty will never, ever, ever, come to fruition – and that’s one between Marvel and DC. Pigs will fly before the two rival studios team up together and put their characters into the same film, but that doesn’t mean the actors who star in these franchises wouldn’t be down for it.
While promoting the upcoming tentpole pic this weekend, the cast of Justice League were asked for their thoughts on a potential Marvel/DC crossover film, and it seems like everyone is into the idea. Not only that, but Henry Cavill, who of course plays Superman in the DCEU, even thinks that we might see such a thing happen one day.
First up, though, Ben Affleck voiced his opinion on the matter, saying that he thinks it’d be great.
“I don’t own either company, but I think it would be great. I’m sure if it could be successful for everybody people would like to do it. I don’t see why not it’s a great idea.”
Cavill chimed in after that, explaining a bit more about the competition that exists between the two studios and the fans.
“I think the rivalry lives in the fans more so than it does in us. For all of us who are making these movies or I’m sure for the comic book artists and writers, there have been rivalries in the past but now it’s just about celebrating these characters, certainly for us. I mean, I’m sure when it comes to deep finances, when it comes to DC and Marvel there’s always going to be competition, yeah, but they need each other to survive as well. If one goes down that means superheroes aren’t popular and you don’t want that because if one goes down the other goes down.”
Ray Fisher, meanwhile, agreed with his co-stars, but noted that it’s important for each franchise to maintain its own “style and integrity.”
“I’ve been a huge DC fan since I was growing up. I had friends who were huge fans of Marvel we’d always, Batman would always win. I would always figure out a way for Batman to beat anybody no matter what universe they were in.
It’s like, it’s red and blue. It’s literally down to what do you like, what are you into. I think to put it all together, you don’t want to take this sort of homogenized sort of tone either, I would love to see some of these characters fight one another, that would be really awesome to see, but you also want to make sure that you maintain your own style and integrity.”
Next, Jason Momoa singled out Thor and Hulk as two Marvel characters he’d love to rub shoulders with.
“I would love to be [in a crossover,]. Hell yeah! I mean like, Hemsworth, I love him. It’s like, to be next to Thor, or to be next to the Hulk. It’s like ‘oh, I’m going to take you out on the water and drown your ass.'”
Finally, Cavill revealed that he thinks a Marvel/DC crossover may actually happen one day, once the two studios have run out of stories to tell.
“It’s been done in comic books and I think once stories start to run out or people feel like they’ve seen it all before, yeah, I think there’s something there in the future.”
Everyone here makes some good points, and it’s nice to learn that they’re all on board for a crossover, but as we mentioned up above, it’s highly unlikely that this would ever actually happen. Sure, we’ve seen it in the comic books before, as Cavill notes, but the big screen is a whole different ball game and given the fierce rivalry that exists between Marvel and DC, we unfortunately don’t ever see a time where a crossover between the two studios would materialize on film.
Still, that doesn’t mean there isn’t much to look forward to and get excited about. For the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor: Ragnarok just had a massive opening weekend at the box office, while this coming February will bring with it Black Panther. DC, meanwhile, has Justice League arriving on November 17th, while Aquaman will swim into theaters next year, on December 21st, 2018.
