Though we haven’t even seen Avengers: Infinity War yet, fans are already eager to find out what the future of the MCU holds once Avengers 4 wraps up Phase Three. Unfortunately, though, Marvel Studios has refused to cough up much information on it. Does this mean that they don’t have a plan in place then and will just make the next lot of movies as they go?
Pfft! Come on, this is Marvel we’re talking about – of course they have a plan. While chatting with Collider in a recent interview, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige revealed that he does know when the long-awaited news about Phase Four will finally arrive, but it’s not going to be for at least another two years, as the studio is committed to the next few films at the moment.
“Yes. It won’t be for a while. Our focus is on the next six movies. Finishing the first three phases, getting Untitled Avengers out into the world in May ‘19 before publicly focusing on anything else.”
Feige’s comments make a lot of sense. Over 2018 and 2019, we’ve still got Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel, Avengers 4 and Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 to look forward to (the latter of which will kick off Phase Four). That’s definitely enough films to juggle at the moment, without looking ahead to the next decade.
Also, Marvel’s probably learned from past mistakes, in which they’ve revealed planned movies years in advance that’ve eventually crossed over to the TV side of things. For instance, Runaways back in Phase One and Inhumans (initially a movie set for 2020).
When pressed for what potential projects could be coming up in Phase Four, Feige was specifically asked about the chances of a Doctor Strange 2, following on from 2016’s origins story for the Sorcerer Supreme. His response sounded pretty positive, though obviously non-committal.
“Certainly, we would love to tell more about the Strange story.”
As for what other movies could be in store, Stan Lee potentially let slip recently that Marvel’s finally working on a Black Widow solo film for Scarlet Johansson. At the moment, though, that remains unconfirmed.
In the meantime, let’s just enjoy what’s left of MCU Phase Three, with Black Panther being the next film to hit cinemas on February 16, 2018.
